What is NEET Exam? What are various challenges in MBBS Admission?

NEET is an entrance examination conducted annually by NTA for admission to MBBS, BDS, B Sc Nursing, AAYUSH and other courses. NEET 2022 was held on 17th July 2022 and the result for this is expected to be announced on 7th September 2022.

After the announcement of the result, the admission process will be governed by MCC, AACCC and various other states' medical regulatory authorities. MBBS admission is a cumbersome process, comprising various stages or rounds in which students select and fill their college options. Then, the competent authority i.e. MCC, AACCC or state admission bodies examine the choices and allot a seat to students as per their respective ranks and various Quotas listed under NEET 2022 admission guidelines.

The NEET counselling is the stage where the majority of students are confused and commit mistakes, due to which many students don’t get a seat in the medical college that they deserve or they would have got , had they been more vigilant and guided by some experienced person for their counselling. To take care of such misshaping and this ”make or break” scenario, Bewise Classes has launched an Exclusive NEET counselling program so that NEET aspirants can reach their dream college.

Eligibility for MBBS Admission:

To pursue courses under NEET, candidates must have passed class 12 in all subjects with a minimum 50% marks for General Category and 40% marks for OBC/SC/ST/PWD . Candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as compulsory subjects and should have passing marks in English ( or any other language) subject.

Various Reservations for MBBS seats in India:

Based on provisions in the Indian Constitution, it allows the Central Government and the States Government to set reservation of institutes funded/governed by them, which provides relaxation in the eligibility criteria needed in various examinations. The reservation policy has been designed by NTA following the guidelines laid out by Indian/state government. Reservation is primarily given to 4 groups: Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Economically Weaker Section, abbreviated as SC, ST, OBC, EWS respectively, along-with Persons with Disability termed as PwD. In Central Universities and for All India Quota Seats, a uniform rule/percentage is followed, which is :

Reservation Category
Reservation Quota
Economically Weaker Section-General (EWS)
10%
Scheduled Caste (SCs)
15%
Scheduled Tribes (STs)
7.5%
Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer)
27%

For PwD categories reservation quota has been capped at 5% horizontally i.e. 5% of seats will be reserved for PwD in all categories seats.

Types of Seats in MBBS Admission :

  • Open Seats
  • All India Quota
  • State Quota
  • Special Provisions/Process

Open Seats

Medical Council of India (MCC) conducts counselling for all seats in Central Government Institutes, there is no provision of State quota in few institutes, namely, AIIMS (all), BHU etc. 100% of seats in such institutes are considered as Open Seats and are filled through counselling conducted by MCC. Although State quota reservation is not applicable in such institutes, however category-wise reservation rule as per the NTA guidelines is still applicable in such institutes.

All India Quota Seats

As per the guidelines given in the NTA notification, 15% of seats in Medical Colleges run by the State have been fixed as All India Quota, reserved for students from other states & UTs from India. For example, MAMC college is a Delhi University College, for which 15% of seats are reserved for students belonging to states other than Delhi.

State Quota Seats

Under the State Quota Rule, 85% of medical seats in a medical college of states are reserved for students who belong to the same state. For Govt. medical colleges located in Delhi,  counselling for state-quota seats is done by either MCC or IPU.

Special Provisions/Process

  • AFMC - Army Forces Medical College
  • Army Force Medical College, Pune, offers the MBBS course with an intake capacity of 150 students. Out of these 150 seats, 115 seats are reserved for male candidates and 30 seats for female candidates respectively. 5 seats are reserved for the candidates sponsored by the government from friendly foreign countries. The candidates applying for MBBS at AFMC Pune are initially shortlisted for the screening process based on merit in the NEET exam. The shortlisted candidates are then called for the screening process involving ToELR, PAT, Personal Interview and Medical Examination at AFMC Pune.

AFMC 2022 MBBS Admission Process in Detail:

  • JIPMER
  • JIPMER has two campuses, PUDUCHERRY & KARAIKAL. There are 150 seats in JIPMER PUDUCHERRY, and 50 Seats in JIPMER Karaikal, out of these seats, 40 & 14 Seats respectively are reserved for students with Puducherry domicile.  JIPMER is an exceptional central govt. institute where there is a provision of reservation for state domiciled students.

  • ESIC Quota

There are 11 ESIC medical colleges in which 437 seats are reserved under the ESIC quota. Watch this video for detailed information on closing ranks of various ESIC colleges in NEET 2021.

Which Factors should NEET/MBBS aspirants keep in mind while selecting a Medical college?

There are various factors associated with personal and professional choices of a person based on which he should make a preference list of colleges. We have pointed out major factors as :
  • Personal Priorities

MBBS is 5.5 Years course, and apart from academics a student should enjoy his college years and its should be a good learning experience for him personally. Student should check his personal comfort and compatibilities for example some students have reservations about food choices  and they don't like regional cuisines and cooking style .Similarly language is also a big barrier while dealing with patients , many time students have to deal with patients speaking only regional language so it becomes hard for a student to comprehend patient's ailemnts and communicate with him properly.

  • Professional Priorities

Post Graduation should be one of the most important factor while choosing a MBBS college.  Students who prefer going for PG should keep in mind various PG quotas in NEET PG admissions. There are many types of PG quotas like

      • Internal PG Quota/Preferences
          • Many institutes have quotas for admission in PG courses, exclusively for graduates from the same institute, for example, IMS- BHU, and AIIMS New Delhi have a 50% internal PG quota for students who have done their bachelor's from the same college.

      • University Quota

Like the Internal PG quota in some states/universities, there is a university quota for PG admission. These quotas/reservations are meant for students who have done their MBBS from the colleges affiliated with these Universities. For example- DU affiliated colleges (MAMC, UCMS, LHMC) have University Quota.

        • State PG Quota
          • This is the most common kind of PG quota where reservations in PG courses are given to students who have completed their MBBS from the same state.

  • Financial Implications

There are many financial obligations which studnets and parents need to fulfill  during the course of a complete MBBS  degree . This include various academic fees, hostel fees, mess fees etc. So if students are from middle class or financialy not sound than they should prefer govt. medical colleges. If a student want to further cut their expenses, they can take admission in their home state/city so that they don't have to pay hostel and mess fees.

  • Bond Period/Amount

This is one of the factor which Students often overlook while taking admission in MBBS. There are bonds which a student have to sign while entering into MBBS. This bond restricts student for mandatory service period in  state/service failing which they have to submit bond amount for moving out of state/service. For example AFMC, Pune has compulsory service of 7 years in Armed Forces or Bond of Rs 63 Lakh, which a student shall pay if he doesn't want to do 7 year compulsory service.
